Grassroots Champion (win $500!)

The Commonwealth Foundation (CF) will recognize one citizen activist as the 2010 Grassroots Champion, and award that person $500!  The winner will be the man or woman who engages in the greatest level of grassroots activism for the Taxpayer's Budget.  Eligible grassroots actions include:  

  • Writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper advocating the Taxpayer's Budget.  Letters to the editor should:
    • Invoke the name of your State Representative or State Senator;
    • Employ at least one state budget fact from the Commonwealth Foundation; and
    • Promote the three criteria of the Taxpayer's Budget.
  • Attending a town hall meeting hosted by your State Representative or State Senator and promoting the Taxpayer's Budget. 

  • Organizing or attending a civic group meeting to promote the Taxpayer's Budget.

  • Meeting with your State Representative or State Senator to urge support of the Taxpayer's Budget.

  • Calling your State Representative or State Senator to urge support of the Taxpayer's Budget.

  • Recruiting others to sign the petition for the Taxpayer's Budget.

  • Recruiting others to contact their state legislators by phone, email, fax and letter.

  • Emailing, faxing or writing a letter to your State Representative or State Senator.

How to qualify

Within 10 calendar days after the Governor signs the state budget into law, send the Commonwealth Foundation a letter detailing your grassroots activities for the Taxpayer's Budget that you completed between Feb. 1 and the budget being signed by the Governor - be sure to include your name, mailing address, email address and daytime phone number, and as much evidence of your grassroots activity as you have, such as a letter to the editor clipped out from the newspaper, a letter from a state legislator thanking you for a visit to his office or for attending his town hall meeting, copies of emails to friends and families promoting the petition for a Taxpayer's Budget, etc.
